Korppoo Velodrome

In Stora Hastö (Big Horse Island) in Korppoo has been a velodrome. What makes it interesting is the fact that it was build by Hjalmar Mäkelä, great booze smugler in 1920's and 30's. Smuggling was done during the alcohol prohibition times in Finland. Hjalmar Mäkelä was a very wealthy person due his awesome business and he spread his wealth like Robin Hood to fellow islanders. He had sports car and bus in island even though the lenght of the island is bit over one kilometer and there was hardly a road there.

He had Finnish championship on track bicycle, type of race is uknown to me. Looking for more information and pictures or drawings of this very interesting characther and small island velodrome. Have to find out is this a legend or true.

Retrokilpurit 2012

It was sunny early summer saturday when around 60 participants started their vintage bicycle run in Vaasa. The Run was organized first time by Vanhat Velot ry (old velocipeds) in Vaasa Veteran cars museum. We ride about 70 kilometer with couple of mandatory stops to enjoy the landscape and architecture in Ostrobothnia area aswell each others awesome company.

There was a nice selection of over 25 year old bicycles with brands like Cresent, Leopard, Bernard, Peugeot, Olmo, Gios, Colnago, Bottecchia, Hermes, Rossin, Gitane, Mercier, Willier, Tunturi, Raleigh, Moser, Bianchi, Pashley, Motobecane, Miyata, DBS, Biemmezeta and the unlucky Zeus.

Some participants were some real authentic costumes, related to old European vintage bicycle runs like L'Eroica and Anjou Vélo Vintage.

Afterparty was nice, lasagne for food, lot's of prizes in different categories and awesome mood. Main worry was: "what does this soul band's music do for butted tubes?"

I'm sure that this bicycle run has many nice years ahead.

Night Rides

Last night I find out again that riding during the night is great experience in the city. Now, spring is at it's best in Helsinki metropolitan area, it's getting warmer every day and night. I listened my old favourite after I left Goldsprint party organized by Yksivaihde. It was Black Sabbath's Paranoid album.

During the hippie ballad "Planet Caravan" suddenly bird song could be heared. It was a perfect match to the song and to mellow feeling I had. I thought it was from the song, but was not. They were real and they could heared over sound of earphones. Black Sabbath's Paranoid album was nothing after that.

It was the minor but warm rain, night and sound of the spring nature which fullfilled the zen of my ride with fixed conversion Monark 92320 1972 with legendary Reynolds 531 tubing.

J.F. Wilson, allmost...

Build-up project has come near to its end. Yesterday we had test ride with new owner. We were scouting saddle and steering solutions. We agreed to change brown Brooks to black one for visual reasons and the idea of riser bar was changed to Nitto Noodle drop bar. Stem lenght is perhaps bit too short but we start with this. Bar tape  is going to be black Cinelli Tennis Bar Tape.

Because new owner wants to use normal shoes we decided to choose pedals with straps. Build up wheels were tested yesterday also first time. Miche hubs, NOS Mavic 40 rims and DT Alpine 3 spokes seems to be quite good compination.

Fly fishing

Sometimes yours truly tries something else. Bicycling and fly fishing are similar in zen, both are full of it. Best zen is still empty in others than the things in question.
